The era of Private University in the educational sector of Bangladesh has been started since 1992. In the initial stage some private universities were established to save the brain drain by brain gain. Basically, the national currency was transferred to the various countries for higher study purpose. i.e., USA, Canada, India, Singapore and European Countries with national brain.
In the last decade of the 20th century a group of Business Entrepreneurs, Bureaucrats, Philanthropists, Social Workers and Educationists took initiative to establish some private universities in Bangladesh. Up to the year 2006, the total number of private university was 54. In 2010 the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) has reformed the Private University Act and re-moving the limitation of the former Act 1992 by introducing Private University Act-2010.
By the inspiration of the new Act-2010 Dr Hakim Md Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan, a true Educationist, Philanthropist, Social Worker came forward to establish a private university and his dream turned into a reality on 14 March 2012 through the establishment of Hamdard University Bangladesh by the approval of GOB and University Grants Commission (UGC).
Hamdard University Bangladesh is situated at the Bank of Meghna near Meghna Bridge at Gazaria, Munshiganj, a place of natural beauty with 180 bighas of land. It bears the characteristics of a University as indicated by Rabindranath Tagore “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high”
Through these programs Hamdard University’s vision is “fostering national development by establishing an excellent higher education institution responsive to society’s need, actively contributing to knowledge and being able to develop capable leaders to face the challenges of the Twenty-first Century”.
